The EU needs to enhance cybersecurity capabilities!

2011. 11. 15.

Yesterday in her one-minute-speech MEP Ágnes Hankiss raised attention to emerging threats for Europe's security. The importance of enhancing EU cybercapacities is emphasised particularly in comparison with other big countries.

According to the EPP Group member, a report made and published by the US Office of the National Counterintelligence Executive shows the emerging threats of inter-state and industrial espionage. "It has been proven that the internet multiplies possibilities and dangers of cyberespionage aiming for economic or political advantages" - emphasised Ágnes Hankiss.

She underlined: "However regrettable, it is still a fact that when it comes to cybersecurity, Europe falls years behind the USA, China and Russia: for instance the Russian intelligence  possesses  a large scale of refined cyberinstruments." According to MEP Hankiss, it would be of vital interest to take stock of defense capabilities against such attacks and to precisely define them in EU internal security strategy.

"We have to prevent our critical infrastructures, such as the energy or  medical industries,  becoming targets of cyberattacks. Neither can we further delay equipping Europol with clear competences needed for operative reconnaissance of atypical attacks and thus we must highlight its pivotal role in the fight against cybercrime" - concluded Ágness Hankiss.
